Red Squirrel (Sciurus Vulgaris) Oooh, Hou ar ye? Welcome to my Scottish home, although it is fantastically beautiful here and we adore it to bits, not to mention how much people seem to like us, and the pine nuts are second to none, we weren't always only lasses and lads from the Highlands, we did have cousins who lived further south.
The problem came when someone had the bad idea that it might be good to have two species of Squirrel in this country and along came a very, very distant grey relation. Well - all I can say is that I don't know who brought them up because they have very poor manners, considering they were guests and they have simply walked in and taken over the place, quite extra ordinary! So if you can believe it we are now endangered in our own country!
But Scottish red squirrels are defending our space (with the help of some rather splendid environmentalist) and Scotland is still a safe place for us. We know that fantastic work is being done to provide new safe spaces for us further south, but it is still a bit of a battle zone for us down there, and we need all the support possible.
What can you do? Well there is this perfectly delightful organic and Fairtrade cotton T-shirt with my picture on - don't think my tail looks fabulous - why don't you wear one, and when in a perky mood tell everyone that hazel nuts are my favourite food and I am so completely beautiful that they need more of my relations in the south
Thank you,
Guid cheerio the nou!
